Elevate Summer Program

Grand View’s ELEVATE Summer Program will help you be successful in college! It is a FREE three-week program for students starting their first year of college. You will participate in a college-level course that will give you tools to succeed at Grand View. The program will also help you get familiar with the campus and the Des Moines area, so you are ready to go in the fall.

The Elevate participants will:

  • Earn three credits toward your college degree from one of the following courses:
    • Fundamentals of Health Sciences: This course is designed to equip incoming students with the foundational academic and personal skills needed to succeed in rigorous STEM coursework and career pathways. Blending hands on learning with collaborative activities, this course helps students build confidence and competence in core areas such as mathematics, scientific reasoning, data analysis, and technical communication. Students will explore real-world applications of STEM concepts, develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and learn to manage time effectively while navigating the expectations of college-level STEM programs. Emphasis will also be placed on cultivating a growth mindset, academic integrity, and ethical responsibility in scientific practice.
    • Fundamentals of Information Systems: This course introduces systems concepts, information technology, and application software. It also introduces students to the use of information in organizations and how information technology enables improvement in quality and timeliness of information. Students extend their knowledge and develop and improve skills in the use of packaged software by solving sets of organizationally related problems.
    • Lifetime Fitness and Wellness: This course reflects the whole person philosophy of addressing the Dimensions for Wellness. It is designed to equip the student with techniques and concepts that foster a healthy balance and a healthy lifestyle. This course allows students to assess their own wellness/fitness levels and develop personal programs for lifelong physical and mental wellness. Students will acquire knowledge regarding the effects of a healthy and unhealthy lifestyle and how these factors impact society and health care costs. Topics include: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility, body composition, nutrition, stress management, environmental and global awareness, motivation for change, and spirituality.

  • Explore the Des Moines area
  • Build connections with other students, staff, and faculty
  • Learn about resources available at Grand View University
  • Receive free housing and meals during the program
  • Be paired with a peer mentor who will provide support for you through the summer program and fall semester

What is Peer Mentoring?

Peer mentoring is a process where two people of similar ages and experiences help each other grow. It’s an informal, but structured relationship that will give you someone to lean on and trust as you begin college. Your mentor will help guide and encourage you and will be a new Grand View friend.
