Albert Ravenholt Visiting Scholar: Dr. Michael Wiederman

Dr. Michael Wiederman will serve as the 2024 Ravenholt Speaker. The events listed below will take place on Tuesday, August 20 in the Speed Lyceum, Student Center.

1:00 - 2:25 p.m. - Workshop by Ravenholt Speaker, Dr. Michael Wiederman, “Thrive, Don’t Just Survive: Bringing Hygge to Your Work Life at GV” 

2:30 - 4:00 p.m. - Workshop by Ravenholt Speaker, Dr. Michael Widerman, “Promoting Hygge, Flourishing, and Wellbeing for the Students We Serve”

Michael Wiederman, Ph.D., earned a Bachelor of Science degree in clinical-community psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint and master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University. He was a full-time psychology professor for 20 years, during which he wrote more than 250 published articles, book chapters, and books, and was a frequent expert contributor to the website Ask the Psychologist.

In 2015 he transitioned to providing professional development as the inaugural Director of Faculty Development at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. From 2020-2022, he served as the inaugural Director of Leadership and Professional Development in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, continuing to evolve programs and services to promote professional development for individuals and teams.

About the Albert Ravenholt Visiting Scholars Endowment

Funds held in the Albert Ravenholt Visiting Scholars Endowment may be available for Global View Events that meet these criteria:

  1. Include any combination of public presentations, classroom presentations, informal discussions with students and faculty members, or visits with media representatives.
  2. Fit with any of these topic areas:
    1. Connect Grundtvigian themes of educating the whole person with modern topics such as purpose, fulfillment, lifelong learning, happiness, health, and wellness.
    2. Enable Grand View to play a lead role in the greater Des Moines community endeavors to be an exemplary center of wellness.
    3. Celebrate Grand View’s Danish heritage of wellness, spiritual fulfillment, and happiness.
    4. Commemorate Albert Ravenholt’s many contributions to international journalism, higher education, and Grand View University.
