Mark Mattes' Recent Contributions to Theology

March 10, 2025

Rev. Dr. Mark Mattes, Chair of the Theology and Philosophy Department at Grand View, continues to make significant contributions to the field of theology. His recent accomplishments highlight both his expertise and his commitment to making complex theological ideas accessible to a broader audience.

Mark Mattes' groundbreaking work, Martin Luther’s Theology of Beauty: A Reappraisal, has recently reached a wider audience with its translation into Korean. This scholarly work explores the profound relationship between theology and aesthetics in the thought of Martin Luther, providing insights into how beauty, art, and theology intertwine in the Lutheran tradition.

In addition to his scholarly works, Mark Mattes recently authored a booklet titled Ditching the Checklist: Assurance of Salvation for Evangelicals (and Other Sinners). This practical and pastoral work addresses the common struggles of evangelicals who wrestle with assurance of salvation. With clarity and compassion, Mattes challenges readers to move beyond the "checklist" mentality, urging them to embrace a deeper, more authentic understanding of salvation.

Mark Mattes continues to be an active participant in academic and theological discussions. In early February, he served on a panel at the Gospel Freedom Conference in Corona del Mar, California, a gathering that focused on exploring the freedom believers have in the gospel. In November, Mattes delivered a lecture at the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) in San Diego, where he addressed Martin Chemnitz’ views on Christ.
